In response to the continuing aggression of the United States in the Middle East, and the unprovoked attack on Iran, the North Alabama Democratic Socialist of America shares the following context and rebuttal:
In Trump’s address on the attack on Iran, he stated that Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism. We contend that the United States is the actual number one state sponsor of terror. The regime and its backers are projecting their own imperial violence onto others to manufacture consent for an illegal and unprovoked war. They say Iran and its proxies are carrying out unprovoked attacks against American forces and international shipping lanes in the region. However, the regime is conveniently ignoring both history and context. These regional actions, such as those in the Red Sea, are a direct retaliation against the ongoing U.S.-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza. The U.S. government starts the clock of history only when it is convenient to frame itself as the victim, ignoring the logical consequences of its own violent foreign policy.
The United States says that Iran is developing a nuclear weapons program that threatens the globe, and military action is necessary to ensure they never obtain one. In reality, the United States is the only country in history to have ever manufactured and unleashed nuclear weapons upon civilian populations. Furthermore, U.S. intelligence has previously conceded that Iran is nowhere close to possessing a nuclear weapon. In stark contrast, Israel possesses illegal nuclear weapons and refuses to sign anti-proliferation treaties, while the U.S. violently prevents Iran from participating in those same diplomatic agreements. They claim the attack is being carried out to liberate the Iranian people, telling them that the hour of their freedom is at hand and urging them to overthrow their government. You cannot liberate a people by dropping bombs on them and destroying their schools. The American working class must stand in solidarity with the people of Iran by opposing this unprovoked attack. The capitalist "Epstein class" running our country hates life, worships death, and simply wants the power to exploit and kill Iranians just as they do Americans. The U.S. government possesses zero moral authority to dictate how a nation treats its citizens when it brutally represses its own protesters and mismanages domestic crises, resulting in the deaths of its own people.
This war is certainly NOT a "noble mission" blessed by God, requiring the sacrifice and probable deaths of American service members. No, Trump is using an apocalyptic invocation of God to justify a completely illegal massacre. The regime is callously treating working-class American service members as disposable pawns for a war that serves no one but the ruling elites. They say that this military intervention is solely to defend American lives and national security interests. That is false, this war is about oil, maintaining global hegemony, and defending Israel. The U.S. wants to maintain a global monopoly on oil to prop up domestic oligarchs and cut off supposed geopolitical rivals like China - a country that has made no motions towards causing us harm. Just as they stole oil in Venezuela, they now want Iran's resources. Furthermore, this is about knocking out Israel's last regional rival, ensuring that the U.S. and Israel can continue to kill children in Palestine without opposition.
The Democratic establishment is already hard at work making a case that this is purely a Trump administration-facilitated attack, and Democrats are demanding explanations. Both parties are fully complicit. Congress controls the sole legal authority to declare or stop wars, yet the supposedly progressive Democrats of the body abdicate this responsibility to maintain a level of abstraction and plausible deniability. They use Trump to absorb the blame while appearing as a "moderating force," but if they truly opposed this heinous act, they would not hesitate to use their authority to stop it.
To conclude, the United States operates not as a beacon of freedom, but as a rogue state and a violent imperial aggressor. Driven by a decaying capitalist system that rewards death and exploitation, the U.S. government routinely fabricates existential threats to justify stealing global resources, propping up fossil fuel oligarchs, and shielding allied ethnostates like Israel from accountability. By cloaking illegal warfare in apocalyptic religious rhetoric and feigned concern for human rights, the bipartisan ruling class actively sacrifices both foreign civilians and its own working-class citizens to maintain Western hegemonic supremacy. The true enemy of the people—both in America and in Iran—is not a foreign nation, but the band of criminals running the U.S. government, and this endless cycle of violence will only stop with their defeat and the advent of genuine democracy run of, by, and for the working class. To realize this goal, we must build a working-class, mass organization aimed at a socialist future.
